How to prepare for your in-home newborn photography session

If you’re reading this you either just had your baby or are anxiously awaiting their arrival – congratulations! There is nothing more special than those first few whirl-wind weeks. Days are nights and nights are days. Everything now revolves around this new little baby. As a mama of three I know how special these first few days and weeks are. In-home newborn photography sessions are a wonderful way to document all the little details without having to worry about leaving your home. Here are my top tips to help you prepare.

It’s all about the light.

Photography is all about finding and using the best light possible. In-home sessions are generally scheduled mid-day so that we get the most natural light streaming in. In the weeks leading up to your session, take some time to see where the light falls in your home around this time. The best light might be found in the nursery, the master bedroom, living room, or even the kitchen! Your photographer will probably do a quick tour of your home when they arrive to find the best locations for your session.

Tidy (a bit).

I know how sleep deprived you probably are following the birth of your little one! Now is the time to enlist some help from your partner or family. Don’t worry about putting everything away, but do a quick once-over to make sure any wrappers, snacks, dishes, etc. are cleared away. Everyone’s home is different and this is what makes these sessions so special and unique. Don’t worry about doing a deep clean by any means, but stashing some excess clutter can make sure the focus is on you and your family.

Make sure your home is warm for your in-home newborn photography session

Depending on the season this might involve turning up the heat a little bit. We want to capture all the little details of your baby, and often this includes stripping them down to their diaper! Make sure it’s nice and cozy for them.

Feed baby just before the in-home newborn session

The beauty of an in-home session is that your photographer comes to you. Take 15 minutes before the scheduled session to find a comfortable spot and just feed your baby. This will relax you and will ensure babe is nice and full and happy. Newborn sessions work around your baby, so don’t worry if they want to feed again during the session! This is totally normal and expected.

Relax and enjoy your session.

All the hard work and planning has already been done, so now is the time to relax and just enjoy the time with your family. Your photographer will guide you through different poses that will feel natural. The most important thing is to relax and just be with your baby. Everything else will fall into place.

You want someone to fully see you and your family and to capture the beauty in the big moments and the small details. Your favourite photographs are the ones that capture a feeling, not the perfectly posed photos. You crave something a little bit different from the everyday – something bolder, more artistic, and even a little cinematic. I see you. Motherhood isn’t always perfect moments. Motherhood is messy. Motherhood is hard. Motherhood is freaking unbelievable. It’s perfectly imperfect. Let’s capture the beautiful chaos of motherhood.
